KOTA KINABALU: A Keningau lad’s fondness for a childhood game and a Papar lass’s fascination for traditional costumes inspired the award-winning pieces they crafted for the national-level Usaha Tegas Heritage (UTH) Art Competition 2023.

Jasper Junior from Kg Patikang Ulu won the “Charcoal/Pencil/Ink” category with his “Laga Biji Getah (Rubber Seed Battle)”, while Sylvernie Belinda Engelbert from Kg Mook won second place in the “Oil/ Acrylic” category with her “The Beauty of Sukob Kopio.”

They received RM8,000 and RM3,000 in prize money, respectively, at the awards presentation ceremony in Kuala Lumpur earlier this month.

Both 22-year-old final year students of the Visual Art Technology Programme at Universiti Malaysia Sabah’s (UMS) Academy of Creative Arts and Technology credited their lecturer, Dr Zaimie Sahibil, for motivating them to participate in the competition.
