Artwork Description

Bu Jun Hao attempts with this aquatint to capture an act of remembering. The use of monochrome blue links to the language of the blueprint while also conjuring a retrospective mood. The strange combination of different elements, some vaguely familiar, others peculiar, sparks the viewers’ curiosity as our eyes scan the image restlessly for meaning.

"Memory · Imprint, also known as Hometown in Memory, is a collection of different scenes with significance in my childhood. Memories and objects are pieced together into a picture by means of image collage. The house with the trees in front of it form the most memorable scenes from my childhood; the nearby chair and lorry are iconic objects inside and outside of the house; the altar above symbolises my faith. The block graphics you see on the surface symbolise memory, expressing that all the scenes and objects in this artwork only exist in the mind's deepest memory, the ones I most want to save."

In compressing architectural, design, landscape and industrial elements and religious iconography into this single frame of personal memory, the work reminds us of the role of individual experiences in creating and valuing a collective cultural inheritance.
