This image of a slingshot at first catches the viewer off guard. Its photographic quality with an intense yet faded colour, the old-school patterned fabric, the old-fashioned concept of a slingshot, all work towards creating a nostalgic feel, as if through a special camera phone filter.

In fact, this screenprint is the result of a complex and meticulous process, the range of colours and halftone effect necessitating many layers and screens, and great care and accuracy in registration.

What is made to look old is not in fact so. The patterned print fabric is perhaps a contemporary interpretation of classic batik motifs, the slingshot is of a modern design using utilitarian materials from today. The artist wanted to learn more about the slingshot, once commonly used to shoot and scare away birds, lizards and monkeys, and now increasingly forgotten, as something from the past that might yet evolve “through the ages”.
