There is a Malay saying,
"Harimau mati meninggalkan belang,
Manusia mati meninggalkan nama".
When a tiger dies, it leaves its stripes. When a man dies, he leaves his name.
Legasi Seorang Tabah pays tribute to the late Shafir Jusoh, a kite and folk game-maker known around the world for his expertise in making wau, and whose passion for his craft took him as far afield as America, France, Australia, China, and Turkey.
Siti Norazizah Binti Mohd Hashim reflects on his story: “the man in the painting does not only leaves his name, he leaves a legacy of craftmanship which not many people are interested in this day and age as the process is complex”. In her painting, she takes care to relay aspects of the making process in picturing her subject at his work, its everyday reality foregrounding a magical backdrop of beautiful floating wau and a clouded night sky. For her, Shafir Jusoh’s story is one of tenacity and determination, of a curious boy who never gave up on his dream. The painting features a bright full moon emerging from the clouds, as Shafir Jusoh’s favourite wau design was that of wau bulan.
“In my opinion, one should never give up on what he loves to do or even his dreams. Never fear failure but rather fear not trying as great things take time.”
