Ayuni Syafiqah’s mixed media composition brings batik cloth, acrylic and wood together to “breathe life into long forgotten culture”, together with its innovations in ideas and design, and the lifestyle it once represented.

Planks of pinewood are attached together to create a kind of canvas, four of them wrapped with batik cloth. On this interesting surface is painted a 19th century antique coal iron, with its characteristic chicken-shaped latch, of the kind that would have been used in the old days in the batik process. Earlier technologies may have evolved, while the aesthetics of traditional batik continue to inspire and permeate daily local life.
