Artwork Description
A raging sea and angry thunderbolts animate this Pop Art styled painting with its expressive comic-book graphics. The style of the work brings up to date an old Malay folktale, creating an interesting meeting of cultural meanings, values and aesthetics.
The story of Padah is a cautionary one that speaks of intergenerational relations as well as moral and social values.
As the artist narrates: “This is a folktale story of a man named Si Tanggang who received retribution after dishonouring his own mother, Si Deruma. Si Tanggang haughtily refused to acknowledge his mother in front of his wife and his ship's crew because he felt ashamed of her impoverished state. As a result of his poor behaviour, Si Deruma begged God to punish Si Tanggang by turning him into stone. When Si Tanggang was punished, he felt sorry for his actions but his regret came too late. This story is a reminder to always honour our parents, no matter what their circumstances may be.”
