Artwork Description
An elderly lady and a young child walk together down a dappled corridor, where the interior and exterior of an old kedai runcit, or grocery store, are rearranged to create a “memory lane”, as described in the title. Tanglung, or moon festival lanterns hang from above; biscuit tins, candy vending machines and an ice cream fridge line the path of the walkers. Among the blue-grey-purple hues of the painting are bright squares and rectangles of red and orange lighting up particular objects, while the transparent rendering of the lanterns, glass panes, and plastic bags create an ethereal, fragile quality.
“Most elements in the painting are enlarged, as I designed the surroundings from the child's perspective. I painted the two main subjects in contrast – the child, being young and cheerful, has a warmer tone to her and a plump figure, while the grandmother has a cool tone and frail figure. The fragments of warm colours around the painting, the random blocks of colour, are what the child notices through her perspective, while other elements in the painting are slowly disappearing with time. Only some fragments still live vividly in our childhood memory.”
