Artwork Description
The intertwining kain songket held in place by a mother’s kerongsang or brooch weaves together a narrative that speaks strongly to the bond between mother and son. It is customary for Malay Muslim men to receive new kain songket for Hari Raya from their beloved mothers. As a craft that has a rich history of more than 600 years in the Malay Peninsula, songket weaving is a fundamental component of the Malaysian identity. Paying exceptional attention to detail, the artist has created a three dimensional effect that provides the piece with an almost touchable lifelike quality.
