The artist pays close attention to detail in this ode to the neighbourhood sundry shop. Employing a combination charcoal, ink and pencil, the artist manages to portray a level of realism from the softness of the proprietor’s traditional cotton Baju Kurung to the teh o ais ikat tepi, lending the illustration an authentic feel. Displaying an intriguing manipulation of scale, the elderly woman is depicted in exaggeratedly smaller scale compared to the goods on sale in her shop. The inexorable passage of time is cleverly expressed in the fragility of the elderly shopkeeper.
